There he is. There’s our Tom. There’s that damn smile.
That’s Tom, not Ethan Hunt, signifying that this is not a newsletter.
Exactly.
You may have noticed (or you may not have - who’s to say! I don’t control what you observe! You are free!) that there was not a newsletter last week week. Honestly, I intended for that to be a week off, but what happened was that the prospect of writing one this week reared its head, and that made me feel very tired. Then I wrote this newsletter, and felt tired finishing that, so another week passed.
So, in the service of not being tired (okay - being less tired), here is an executive decision made by me: we’re taking a little break in the middle of this Tom Cruise series. Not a long one, but not a week off. More like a month, give or take. I like these newsletters being weekly, and I like them being long, and to accomplish both of those things, we need a little time to stock up, like a bear hibernating during winter.
Nostalgia Detective was, candidly, very much a product of unemployment. It started after I had finished education forever, and kicked back in the following year after some certain life events popped me back out into the job market. If the run of the MCU series into the Fast series into this Cruise series with only a few weeks off in between seemed like a lot to you - well, reader, I had the time. I also really, really needed something to do.
I am, for the time being, “not unemployed anymore, for the time being”, so that means there are a few more demands on my time, which I have chosen to compound by keeping some freelance writing going on the side. (Sorry - paid writing takes priority. Capitalism!!)
To be clear, that does not mean this newsletter is ending, or even going for some long Odinsleep situation. It just means that, in this big old tug of war between capitalism and creativity, with mental health as the poor sap in the middle (METAPHORS), we all need to make a few compromises. Hence the break, and hence the break that’ll happen between this series and the next one too. It’ll be more newsletter, just a little slower.
So, here’s the deal. It’s a mini-hiatus. Nostalgia Detective will be back with Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol at the end of the month, unless it’s not.
But it’ll probably be.
Unless it’s not.
Happy Easter, all.
a rift in time
It's good to take a production break every once in a while, esp. when you write long detailed articles. Have a good rest!
